Developing Honest Communication

Honest communication takes some getting used to ...

So sometimes I let my kids swear.

They are 8 and 10 right now. I don't know, it just seems fair. I've never agreed with double standards, and I've yet to stop swearing (myself) when the situation warrants. So, sometimes I let them swear, too. At the very least, it always lightens the mood.  What?  I'm just being honest.

Listen_Up.JPGDid you just open your eyes wide and get all offended? Did you purse your lips and tell yourself what you're supposed to think about such blasphemy? Or did you, perhaps, bust up laughing and shake your head in the affirmative with a smirk on your face? Hello, door number 3! Welcome to the new age of conscious awareness and honest communication! What's that all about? Well, I can tell you my attitude and opinion on it.

Humans have managed to develop their own version of honest communication.  It is selective to say the least.  The negative effects of poor communication are astounding.  From broken homes to broken countries, we are all guilty to some extent.

Can you honestly say you are honest 100% of the time?  What about when your spouse's breath smells awful and he or she wants to get kissy?  You think it in your head, but do you say it out loud?  Or how about when your best friend needs to get together and vent and you just don't have the energy to listen again?  Are you honest and say, "I don't want to?"  Or do you make up a little white lie, so as not to hurt feelings, and say you can't?  There is a difference.  It's called honest truth vs. sorta truth.  And then there is the burden of keeping the truth bottled up inside.  That's even worse ... the damage to your Self is very costly indeed.

I know, it's a matter of etiquette, political correctness, protecting others ... but what about you?  What do you think it's costing you in energy and emotions to protect everyone else all the time?  What if we all took up our own arms of responsibility so others would not have to do it for us? What would that world look like?

Everyone's heard that actions speak louder than words ...

So why do so many people not take action in order to change what is not making them happy or successful? Why do so many people look to others to make a difference for them in their lives?  Why is it that so many people cannot figure out why this world is seemingly crumbling around them?
